One thermostat reading cannot represent the whole home. A cool basement may show high relative humidity while the first floor looks normal, and a bathroom may remain wet long after a shower if its exhaust is weak. Comparing temperature and humidity on each occupied level over several days is often more useful than relying on one display in the kitchen.
Humidity is not a mold test. It tells you whether conditions deserve attention and whether moisture control is working. Massachusetts public-health guidance emphasizes moisture control as the primary way to prevent mold growth and notes that routine mold testing is often unnecessary because there are no health-based indoor-air standards for mold.
A closer assessment makes sense when humidity remains above 60%, a dehumidifier runs constantly without controlling the space, readings vary sharply among floors, or condensation, staining or musty odors recur. The useful next step is to follow the pattern before buying more equipment.
