An indoor air-quality monitor can show that particles rise when dinner goes on the stove, a bedroom gets stuffier after the door closes or basement humidity stays high after rain. What it cannot do is reduce the condition of an entire home to one perfect score. These devices detect only the pollutants or conditions their sensors were designed to measure, and performance can vary with placement, temperature, humidity, age and manufacturer.
PM2.5 is a good example. A monitor can show when fine-particle concentration rises and falls, but the number cannot identify whether those particles are cooking aerosol, smoke, dust, pollen, pet material or mold spores. Use the trend to connect changes with household activities and decide what deserves a closer look—not to name the particle or diagnose its source.
Carbon dioxide can provide a useful clue about ventilation in an occupied room. If bedroom CO₂ repeatedly climbs overnight and falls when ventilation changes, the pattern tells you something about air exchange under those conditions. It is not a universal verdict on every aspect of the air and should be interpreted alongside occupancy and how the room was being used.
Broad VOC indicators and humidity readings also need context. A VOC sensor may show a change after painting, cleaning or unpacking new furniture, but it usually cannot identify the individual chemicals. A lower total-VOC value does not automatically make a mixture safer. Humidity can reveal moisture-prone conditions, but it does not prove mold is present.
Patterns are more useful than snapshots. Monitoring across several normal days can capture cooking, showering, occupancy and HVAC cycles that a quick reading may miss. Even a week of screening cannot represent every season, weather event or unusual activity.
